The Deal With Biodegradable Packing Peanuts

Packaging is important since it’s the first impression customers get when they receive the products from our online store.

Because of that, we spent lots of time deciding on the packaging material: what to include in the inner packaging, where to get our boxes from, and how to keep it as low waste as possible.

We chose to keep our packaging as minimal as possible, where the customer does not have to worry about going through the hassle of throwing away heaps of useless packaging material that is normally tossed in the garbage or the recycling bag minutes after opening a new parcel. For the inner packaging, we went for dissolvable biodegradable peanuts (the coolest zero-waste invention yet!)

If you don’t know what those are, here's some insight about why they are such a cool zero-waste swap:

Biodegradable peanuts are the perfect alternative to traditional polystyrene peanuts, a plastic polymer better known as Styrofoam. Those are traditional loose-fill packing peanuts that are difficult to decompose and after disposal, they can end up in a landfill or floating around the ocean for many, many years. Not cool!

Starch-based packing peanuts have been around since 1991 and more and more companies are now turning to them as a green alternative.

They serve as an eco-friendly cushioning for your goodies when sent out for shipping and are made of natural sources such as corn starch. They decompose in water leaving no trace of toxic waste! (FDA compliant)

Ways to dispose of them:

  • Run them underwater and you’ll notice how quickly they dissolve.
  • Keep them and reuse them to store your glassware or any other stuff you have around the house that could use some cushioning.
  • Leave them in the box and reuse the packing peanuts for your pets to play with!
